Olympic Weight Lifting

1-Snatch
2-Clean & Jerk

Olympic lifting is a style. While someone may participate in Olympic lifting as a sport they may never go to the Olympics. It is the name of the sport. It consists of only 2 lifts, both of them, overhead lifts. The snatch, which is carried out with straight arms, and the weight is lifted from the ground, above the head in 1 movement. And the clean & jerk, which is 'cleaned' from the ground to the shoulders, where a small rest is taken, and then 'jerked' above the head. A lifter can lift more in the clean & jerk than they can in the snatch. It is contested at both the Commonwealth and Olympic games. As with power lifting, it USED to be only male but now woman are allowed to enter competitions. Unlike Power lifting, Olympic style is Powerful as it demands speed. There are different weight classes or divisions to assist in fair competition.

Power Lifting

Power lifting is a weight lifting competition made up of three lifts. They are:
1-Bench-Press
2-Back Squat
2-Dead-Lift

Power lifting has nothing to do with power. It is pure strength. All three lifts are carried out and the total of all three best attempts are added together to decide the winner. It is not an Olympic event but there are world championships. There are also weight class divisions to keep the contests fair.

Resistance training, weight training and strength training,

are all names given to using the resistance offered by barbells, dumbbells, and weight machines to increase your functional strength, power, or size, for hopeful performance gains in your sport. This training may also be carried out for pure cosmetic reasons, ( to look better, more attractive ) and are also employed by medical treatment staff, physios and doctors to rehabilitate form specific Musculoskeletal injuries. You don't have to be a sports person to lift weights. Exercises with no equipment, using your own bodyweight as resistance can also be used to develop your muscles. E.G. press-ups, chin ups.
