"Doing School" is a great book by Denise Clark Pope. If you are looking for a student perspective on secondary school education, this is the book for you. While it is set in America, having a son in the NZ secondary school system, I can see a lot of similar aspects.
If you can't find the book (Fishpond or Amazon) or are too busy to read it, there is a free one hour podcast lecture that Denise gives on this, that gives a great overview of the project. It is available from iTunesU. Once in the Stanford section of iTunesU, go to Education and Teaching and learning (see screen shot to the left).
As well as Denise's talk there are lots of great topics to explore, and another of my favorites is Parker Palmer and the Courage to Teach. Enjoy! :-)
Teach for America have some great ideas on how to improve student achievement.
